They say a clean desk is a sign of a cluttered mind, but in the world of mixed media, I’m pretty sure a messy workshop is a sign of a soul on fire.

This week, I looked around my studio and realized something: my hands are covered in ink, my apron has three new colors on it, and I can’t actually see the surface of my workbench. And you know what? My heart is absolutely full.

Why the Mess Matters

As makers, we often feel the pressure to have those “Pinterest-perfect” workspaces. But real art—the kind that moves you—happens in the middle of the chaos. It’s in the accidental paint splatters, the scrap paper piles, and the “what if I try this?” moments that don’t leave room for tidying up.

When we allow our workshops to become a “beautiful disaster,” we’re giving ourselves permission to:

  • Experiment without fear: You can’t worry about the carpet when you’re chasing a breakthrough.

  • Stay in the flow: Stopping to clean breaks the creative momentum.

  • Honor the process: Every smudge on your hand is a mark of progress.

To my fellow Rahway creators and mixed media enthusiasts: don’t be afraid to let the glitter fly and the glue stick. The masterpiece is worth the cleanup later.
